I was inspired by large scale world-building projects like Serina which asks what a world would look like if the only vertebrates inhabiting a planet were finches. The image depicts a world where humans have transcended to almost godhood, so for entertainment, they made "The Cube," each habitat on the cube would have different starting conditions, so the humans could watch how life would evolve in these harsh environments, it was like a zoo in some ways. The top habitat is the only one I remember clearly, it started out as just dirt and water, and all the microbiology that came with it, along with a bunch of different predators. The goal was to see which predator would come out on top, but after the territory fighting was over there was nothing to eat so most things died of starvation or infighting, due to the fact that this habitat was facing up it never got direct sunlight, so after a while the dominant species in this habitat where fungi, a few of the carnivores survived by feeding off their fungi, but due to the decrease in food quality and sunlight they became more akin to moles in size and function.
